Advanced Placement (AP):  A Brief Overview

Earn university credits at NJC – take an AP Exam!

What is AP?

AP exams are developed by the College Board in conjunction with high schools, colleges and universities. The curricula students cover in preparation for the AP exams is at a university / college level – it is intended for bright and dedicated students in their last year of high school. AP Examinations take place in May of each year, with results being released in July. Students may submit their AP grades to universities and may qualify for university credit or advanced placement. Regardless of university recognition, AP exam preparation provides students with an enriched curriculum as they prepare for university.

AP at Neuchâtel Junior College:

Neuchâtel Junior College offers the opportunity to write any Advanced Placement exam in May of each year. Advanced Placement exams are enrichment beyond Ontario Ministry Credits and may be accepted by universities for credit. At NJC there are two options for preparation:

  1. Students can prepare independently, or follow any curriculum components that may be integrated into the corresponding Ontario Ministry courses..
  2. If demand warrants it, NJC may offer AP workshops to help students prepare for certain AP exams. Please note that these would not be counted as Ontario Ministry Credits.
  3. Students who have completed enough credits for graduation or already have an OSSD or other high school diploma must take a minimum of one AP course.

Please note: Students wishing to complete the Studio Art AP must realistically begin work on their portfolios prior to their arrival at NJC. Info on AP Studio Art can be found at apcentral.collegeboard.com.
